About SoulScience
Trauma-informed education, training, and reflective practice, grounded in science, shaped by lived understanding, and built to help organisations support the people they serve.
What We Do
SoulScience helps organisations understand trauma, survival patterns, the nervous system, and emotional pain so their teams can respond with greater awareness, compassion, and confidence.
We deliver workshops, staff training, reflective practice sessions, and parent & carer education for schools, charities, care settings, family support services, and community organisations.
All sessions are tailored to your setting and grounded in trauma-informed psychoeducation, body-aware understanding, and evidence-informed practice.
Why This Work Matters
Many of the people your organisation supports have experienced adversity, instability, or trauma. Their responses, including withdrawal, aggression, emotional overwhelm and shutdown, are often survival adaptations, not choices. Peer-reviewed research associates childhood adversity and chronic stress with measurable differences in stress-response gene expression and autonomic nervous system regulation, providing a coherent biological basis for what teams often experience as confusing or challenging behaviour.
When staff understand this, they stop asking “What's wrong with them?” and start asking “What has happened to them, and how can we respond safely?”
Critically, the research also points toward plasticity. The body is not fixed. Evidence-informed, trauma-aware approaches are associated with measurable improvements in safety, engagement, and reduced crisis-driven responses. This shift transforms organisational culture, reduces conflict, and protects both the people you serve and the wellbeing of your team.
The Founder
Science · Lived Experience · Professional Training
SoulScience was founded by Carla Greig, a biomedical scientist turned trauma-informed educator. Before this work, Carla spent years in clinical and research laboratories, studying the human body at a molecular level.
She holds a first-class honours degree in Biomedical Science and a Master's in Applied Bioscience from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. Her professional experience includes setting up and managing biolabs, working on innovation projects, and contributing to frontline genetic diagnostics during the Covid-19 pandemic, including RT-PCR testing and next-generation sequencing.
That scientific foundation shapes everything SoulScience delivers. The nervous system is not an abstract concept here. It is understood through the lens of someone who has studied the body's systems at their deepest level.
Why This Became Personal
Alongside the science, Carla brings her own lived experience of navigating adversity and understanding how the body and mind adapt under pressure. That personal understanding is what gives this work its depth, its honesty, and its commitment to making trauma-informed education genuinely accessible, not just for individuals, but for the organisations and communities that support them.
The Evidence Behind the Work
SoulScience's approach is built on a growing body of peer-reviewed research. Human studies and systematic reviews consistently link childhood trauma and chronic stress with measurable differences in stress-response gene expression, a process known as epigenetic modification. These findings span multiple cohorts and provide a coherent biological rationale for why early adversity has lasting effects on how people respond to the world.
Research also connects trauma exposure to changes in autonomic nervous system regulation, the biological system governing fight, flight, and freeze responses. This is not abstract theory. It is measurable. It helps explain why people under chronic stress react in ways that can appear disproportionate, unpredictable, or difficult to reach.
Importantly, the science also points toward possibility. Early evidence suggests that effective, trauma-informed support is associated with biological change. The body is not static, and healing is not only psychological. Implementation research further confirms that whole-setting, trauma-aware approaches produce measurable outcomes: reductions in exclusions, restraint incidents, and escalations; improved engagement, staff confidence, and perceived safety.

Biomedical Science Background
BSc Biomedical Science (First-Class Honours) and MSc Applied Bioscience, both from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.
Professional experience in clinical laboratory settings, biolab management, and genetic diagnostics, including Covid-19 RT-PCR testing and next-generation sequencing at Cambridge University Hospitals.
This scientific grounding informs SoulScience's evidence-informed approach to understanding the nervous system, trauma, and the body's survival responses.
How We Work
These principles guide every session, workshop, and programme SoulScience delivers.
People are not broken
Difficult behaviours and emotional responses often have survival logic. We help teams see the person behind the pattern.
Safety comes first
Before any deep work can happen, people need to feel safe. Our training helps organisations build that safety into their culture.
The body matters
Trauma is biologically embedded. Research links chronic stress and adversity to changes in nervous system regulation and stress-response pathways. Understanding this changes how teams respond to distress.
Compassion is more effective than shame
Punitive responses escalate. Compassionate, boundaried responses create the conditions for change.
Education is powerful
When staff understand why people respond the way they do, they feel more confident, less reactive, and better supported.
Clear boundaries, always
SoulScience provides education and training — not therapy. We are transparent about scope and signpost clinical support where needed.
A Note from Carla
I created SoulScience because I believe that understanding changes everything. When people, and the teams who support them, are given clear, compassionate knowledge about trauma and the nervous system, they respond differently. With more confidence, more safety, and less harm.
This work is informed by my own experience as much as by my training. I know what it is to carry patterns that feel confusing and painful, and I know what shifts when those patterns are finally met with understanding rather than judgement.
SoulScience exists to make that understanding accessible, not just for individuals, but for the organisations and communities that hold them. If you are here, something brought you. That matters.
